I seem to be shooting a lot of fitness recently, this one was a lot of fun. Jamar is such a super nice guy, with a huge heart and joy of life, the intense expressions were invariably followed by a huge smile. The tattoos just served to give that edge of intensity to the images.
The client remit was dramatic black and white photographs, though we had him working out pretty hard a spray bottle of water came in handy, and yes all of those plates on the bench press bar are for real !. The hardest shots were of him on the bench, it was a shot that just didn't seem to want to come together, the expression and direction just didn't produce the right image we were looking for. Until a song came on and he got lost in his own world for a few bars and boom..just what we were going for - a good illustration to keep shooting, keep pushing until the image comes to you.
Lighting was with a pair of speed lights, key light through a shoot through white umbrella, rim and kick lighting a bare light on low power. Post processing, main black and white conversion custom settings in SilverEFX, with additional dodge and burning in Photoshop.
